Lost in Translation

I arrived at Malden City council chambers for the scheduled hearing on the fare hikes and service cuts, only to find MBTA officials providing a sad demonstration of the inefficiency that most most customers have grown used to.
I went to the literature tables hoping to pick up more information about the meeting, but all they had on the tables were the “Proposed Rate Change” flyers that were download-able from the MBTA website.
Looking more closely at the pamphlets, I noticed that there were no flyers in Cantonese; next to me, a woman with a Haitian accent inquired about accessible literature.  When the overwhelmed gentleman at the table handed the Haitian woman a booklet in Cape Verdean Creole, I spoke up.
“Is there any literature for Haitian Creole speakers?” I asked
“Yeah, sure,” the man replied, and tried to hand me the Cape Verdean handout.
“Uh, Sir, Haitian speak French Creole.  Cape Verdeans generally speak Portuguese Creole.”
“So there’s more than one Creole?”
Mercifully, as I stood there trying not to let my jaw hit the floor, another gentleman came to the rescue.
“Hi, is there something I can get you?”
“Yeah, got any pamphlets in French?”
Uh, don’t see any.  So what are our Haitian neighbors supposed to use?”
‘Oh! Yeah, we’ve got Creole,” handing me a pamphlet in Portuguese Creole.

I got pretty much the same response when I enquired about information in Cantonese: I was referred to the “Chinese” pamphlets – in Mandarin.

When I enquired about translators for those who wanted to testify, I was told my a T official that a translator was requested from UMass and would be at the meeting “shortly.”
The meeting began at 6pm and was scheduled to run until 8pm.
The translator arrived at 730.

Heart Surgery, or Boob Job? Which is More Important?

STUPID MATH PROBLEM #1

If you had a heart attack, and your Doc says you have a blockage in your arteries, would you spend your money on:

a.) heart bypass surgery

or

b.) a boob job

Duh.  It's simple economics that anyone understands – buy bread and milk before steak.  Fix the roof before you install a pool.  Winter coats for the kids come before vacations to Miami.

Try telling this math word problem to the Massachussets Department of Transportation.  When the MBTA needed money to repair the mass-transit system they had, the DOT decided to saddle the subway system with upgrades that were required for the Big Dig project.

Let's be clear on this; the MBTA did not need to bury the Green Line, remodel Haymarket, rebuild North Station, or engage in any of the beautification projects of the early 2000's.  Those costs were imposed on the subway system by the DOT to satisfy loan requirements for the remodeled highway system.

Now the T is out of cash and wants to drastically raise fares and cut bus, commuter rail and ferry service.

STUPID MATH PROBLEM #2

If the bank gives you half the money to remodel your house, do you

a.) scrape together the other half of the money yourself

or

b.) rob your neighbor at gunpoint for the rest of the money?

Yeah, I know – another Duh.  But the MBTA and its riders are currently being forced to pick up nearly 50 million dollars of expenses from Department of Transportation mismanagement of the Big Dig project.

Subway riders are now subsidizing automobile drivers, leaving no money for essential services.  This makes fare hikes and service cuts inevitable.

So what do you think?  Should T riders pick up costs pegged to the Big Dig?

Sound off and let us know what you think.
